If AU, how is your character AU? At the end of 201 Katherine told him it had always been him. They were together since then and Katherine helped him protect Elena. She wasn't trapped in the tomb and instead of double crossing him and Stefan, Klaus compelled her to go with him. She died at one point while being here, he went and got revenge on the Damon who killed her.
